I was reading some of you had trouble with broken visor mirror covers. Mine squeaked when opening. I noticed the plastic hinge rubbing could cause it to rub through and eventually break. My solution was a quick spray of silicone. No more squeaking and operates smoothly. Just cover spray tip with rag to prevent over spray. A quick blast is all you need.
Some people have said the evaporative "carrier" in the silicone spray can attack rubber (weatherstrip) and plastics (visor mirror cover). I don't have any experience using it on those kinds of things, does the fine print on the can say anything?
I use a little dielectric silicone grease on the mirror hinges and also where the edge of the cover rubs against the mirror frame. It still squeaks but we went 44k miles on the 2006 (sold) and currently 48k miles on the 2009, without a problem. Go figure...
