Default Vin Code W vs. T Engines

I was reading the manual and came across something in the fuel section that says cars with a vin code W can use 87 gas but 91 is recommended, and vin code T engines can use 91 but 93 is recommended, and 87 should only be used in emergencies.

Does the W stand for the machine built LS3 and the T for the hand built LS3 found in the Grand Sport?

If so why would the hand built one be optimized for a higher fuel grade? I thought they were both built to the same specs.

Does the T engine get better HP from 93 octane fuel than the W engine?

I think I answered my own question. The T is the LS9 isn't it?

I'm thinking it's the LS7 in the Z06, but I've been wrong before...

I don't know about the lettering but I think I remember reading the 7 liter engine having to use 93 octane and the 6L being able to use lower octane....

Page 12-4 of the 2012 owners manual states that T is the VIN code for the ZR1. I checked the VIN of a 2012 ZR1 and it did have the T code. I also checked a 2009 and it had the R code but a 2010 and 2011 had the T code. Looks like the R code was only used for the 2009 ZR1's.

Hey,

my VIN is 1G1YZ....but it's not a ZR1, it's a 427 manual w the LS7. on the 2013 GM explanation sheet, YZ is not even listed?? anyone know why??

also, the sequence number is 701989 and it rolled off the assembly line on 8 Jan, so is the sequence number specific only to 427 Convertibles? if so, that seems to be a very low production rate for the year, as production ceases on 28 feb.

tks

Phil

IIRC, I believe both the ZR1 and the 427 'vert each had their own VIN sequences...
