I installed my MGW shifter, the latest model. Of course, there are no detailed instructions other than "remove old shifter and bolt on this one". So thats what I did. But I know there are some things I didnt do right in the install. Can anyone tell me what these holes on the side of the shifter are for?
There is one on the opposite side as well. I bought mine used and it had some of that green "grease" that you see in the picture covering the shift ball. Cant for the life of me think what previous owner was using that hole for...

They don't mention the holes on the side of the shifter..what are they for? I know about how to install it. But I don't know what the holes do. Also, they spend way to much time on how to take apart the car and not on how to actually secure the shifter and where what how to use the supplied screws and accessories.
Try calling MGW with questions. They have terrific customer service!
The installation CD is very thorough, and the hardest part of the job is dealing with the console and the wiring behind it. Not really hard, just a little tedious. Installing the shifter itself is super easy - four bolts.
If you don't have the CD I can send you a copy of mine.
As mentioned in a post above, the holes do nothing, its just the way the shifter is built. The biggest part of the install is taking the centre bezel off, the shifter is just a direct bolt-on with 4 bolts, that's it, only thing to watch for is don't over torque the bolts because the base is alloy and you don't want ot strip the threads, and you have to cut the OEM rubber to fit with the MGW shifter.
