Default Nav./audio question

i'm going to try out my navigation system for a trip this weekend but there is something i haven't gleaned from the info provided in the manual.
when i enter my destination etc., and head out on the highway, what happens with the audio. in other words if i'm showing my nav. screen for directions, and i'm listening to the xm or a cd, do you have to switch screens to change radio channels, or does changing cd's switch off the nav. screen? i have a notion that if i'm in nav. mode and i switch back to the source screen, then i turned off the nav. function.
is there something i'm missing on cycling between the screens without turning off the previous function? i assume the music plays while the nav. screen is displayed.
just looking for a little insight on how this all works together.

On our '12 to change channels by using the screen you have to change back to the audio screen. If you have steering wheel controls you can use those to control the audio even with the nav screen up.

When you change to the radio screen, the nav continues in the background. You don't loose anything.

The system actually works quite well. Changing to audio screens does not wipe out the navigation route. It will be current when you return to the screen and after the ignition is cut off and restarted. The system reduces audio volume when route information is announced. One quirk, it is not unusual to have to manually cancel a route after arriving at the destination.
Enjoy the ride!

It will not turn off. In fact, if you have the HUD, it will show the turns there (I think only in street mode), which is really cool. If you have HUD, nav, and auto, and you are using the nav, playing the stereo, and in sport mode, the gear indicator will actually move out of the HUD into the DIC

Be sure to take a second method of navigation or no telling where you will end up.

Good luck.................................... . you will need it!

Planning a trip for next week, our friends called and said we'd have to be lead for part of the trip because they couldn't get one of the destinations into their Garmin. It went into our C6 nav just fine.

No system is perfect, the C6 has more features than many but using it is not intuitive. After using it for 6 years, I prefer the C6 nav over our Garmins. But it took a while.

The tutorial from talon90 (member here) is excellent- download it to your laptop and sit in the car while watching it. Just don't kill your battery...

And hey, have a good trip!

From the time you hit the "I agree" button until you turn the car off, the navigation system is functioning in the background. This is regardless of what ever else you do with the touch screen from this point on. You can change to source or any of the interface menus and the nav will continue in the background and pick up right where you left off when you return to the nav map screen. This is the case whether you are under route guidance or not.

If you start on a route under route guidance (and you have voice guidance turned on) you will receive spoken instructions over the audio system. If your HUD is in street mode, you will get turn by turn information projected on the HUD.

If you are listening to any audio source, XM, CD, AM/FM or Aux, while on a guided route, the audio will automatically be muted and the spoken voice guidance will take priority during each spoken direction and then you will be returned to to your music. Note that it does continue playing in the background while muted so you will be further along in the song when it returns. It isn't paused, only muted.

thanks. it looks like the weather is turning out great. i found the post for the 'gold coast concours' show on long island on sunday. thought it would be a good day to hit the road early for some fun.

and thanks to everybody for their input. the 'nuts and bolts' stuff is pretty well explained in the manual, it was the 'how it works' stuff i thought i ought to understand a little better.
AND, not one "do a search", or one beaten dead horse showed up.
