Ok, the first time many miles ago I put my engine light out by tightening the cap and driving though a half tank of fuel. Now my lamp has been on for some time and I'm not sure if my gas cap is even tightening properly. Does anyone think I should just replace the $26 cap, hope it works, and call it a day. I have very little time available to bring the car in for diagnostics.

That's what I did last week. Our 2009 gave an occasional gas smell if I fill up and then drive a twisty road where the fuel gets thrown around. No CEL. Dealership was willing to pressure test it etc, but I just got a new cap and we'll see if that fixes the problem. I had some other work done at the same time, and the dealership didn't charge me for the cap.
I would check for codes. Most auto parts stores will do it with no charge. A check engine light will set a code. If it's the cap it usually will say check gas cap or something like that. (I think) Maybe somebody will help on that.
My gas cap message came on awhile ago, first time I took it to the dealer and they replaced the cap free of charge. Same thing happened about 6 months later, greased it, tightened it, loosened it, tried everything and the message stayed on. I went to the local auto parts store and bought a $19 Stant cap (don't remember the number, non locking though), message went out next day, end of problem and almost a year later still no problems.

+1 I did the same thing, problem solved. Cost was $11.95. Save yourself the headache from going to the dealership.
There's a 10 year/100 k warranty on gas caps since 2005.I just bought one at a local auto parts store because GM doesn't fix what's broke, they buy more.

It's a letter to 2005 owners dated August 2005. It states for owners of 2005 Corvettes only. The warranty is for 10 years from the in service date or 120,000 miles which ever is first.
