ok so tonight I went out to put the top back on. The car was locked but I had the windows down, went to the back of the car, popped the hatch, and went back to put the FOB in the gear shift boot to get it out of the way.
I got the top in place and went to get inside the car to lock on the top. I pressed the door handle pad and the car would not open, even though the FOB was right there in the car.
I had to take the FOB out of the car and hold it in my hand as I pressed again on the door handle pad and the car still would not unlock!
I reached into the car and pressed the unlock button on the door to get the darn door to open.
The antenna that detects the fob outside the car and causes the car to unlock is not the same antenna inside the car that determines a fob has been left in the car. Leaving a fob on the seat will not cause the car to unlock when you pull on the door handle.

thanks for the clarification...these cars have more antennas than a satellite.

A FOB left inside WILL allow the car to unlock if the car was not manually locked when you left the car. BUT sometimes they dont like to work in certain positions.
My dealer left the fob on the top of the dashboard, and then right in front of him, he saw the car refuse to open. Luckily the window was open.
WHICH IS WHY I ONLY drive with a spare key hidden outside, and a spare FOB wrapped in aluminum foil and in the rear cubby. The darn unlock system is not 100% all the time effective. No big deal if you do what I do...
