If you have to buy a disc, you can usually get one that's a year or two old for a lot less money. Just be sure it works in the C6 system, not all GM discs will interchange.
We buy a new C6 disc every year because we drive it all over the country, but our Toyotas are mostly for local driving and only get a new disc every 3 years.

What version disc do you have? They haven't changed much in the past few years. As others have said, look at the used parts section. Usually people are always upgrading and selling their older version.
