Didn't know this or if its true and couldn't give the write answer to a friend. I now have a 96 C4, but have owned other years and a 98.01 C5. My friend said his dad bought a G8 ponti and it has a LS2 in it, and it doesn't always run on all 8. Do the corvettes run the same way, as I maybe looking into buying a C6 also pretty soon.
The C7 will be the first Corvette to ever not run at all times on all of its cylinders.
Right on. GM and others have introduced technologies to operate high performance engines on fewer cylinders when running at very low loads, as in highway cruising where you may need less than 50hp to cruise at 70mph. The Corvette has not yet implemented this, but many trucks, SUVs, and other large-engine vehicles have had it for the last few years. It is both a fuel economy and engine efficiency measure.
I have the Active Fuel Management system in my '08 Avalanche and I don't notice any difference in the sound whether it's cut out half the cylinders or not.

Does that have an instantaneous gas mileage readout like the Vette? If so, have you ever observed it at the moment the AFM kicked in when cruising on the highway? If so, what did you observe?

It does have the instant gas mileage readout. When you say, kicked in, do you mean when it cuts the cylinders in or out? I've watched it on occasion and it fluctuates just like it does on my Vette. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see anything unusual or out of the ordinary.
The auto Camaro's have it. It sucks. It kicks in all the time. I had one, I tuned my AFM out. Sounded terrible! It would be ok if it only kicked in on the highway at high speeds, But that's not how it works. Then I bought a 6 speed manual C6 Vette. Ye haw!

What do you see or hear when watching yours?
Really? What I mean is, do you see the MPG immediately go up when it goes from 8 cylinders to four? Is that somehow contentious to you?
Ya, the Instant MPG goes up when it turns off half the cylinders but it doesn't create any noise or disrupt how the truck is running. I've always laughed at the display and wondered how the heck they know that. It's always been more amusing to me to watch it than to follow it as fuel mileage gospel.
I usually always keep the displays in my Av & the Vette on the Fuel Range setting since I'm on the road so much. I really like to keep an eye on what kind of range I have remaining.

I've enjoyed that feature ever since my '85 Vette back in '85. The onboard computer calculates the instant MPG at the speed of light based upon all engine control system sensor inputs and is, actually, probably dead on. What kind of instantaneous readout change have you observed?

I just like watching the changes based on the pitch of the road, whether I'm going uphill or downhill or on/off the throttle. Just amazing to watch it go from 13 MPG to 99 MPG just based on a grade change in the highway.
Although the Vette doesn't have the AFM, it's still fun to watch how the throttle affects that split second calculation even if it's just for a short time.
Our 2006 Monte Carlo SS with the LS4 V8 has it. In city driving conditions when it shuts off 4 cylinders you can hear a change in the tone quality of the exhaust note.
Other than the change in the exhaust note you cannot tell the difference. When you push an the gas the activation is instant and you can't tell the other 4 cylinders were ever shut off.

Put a true dual exhaust with Magnaflows on it and you will hear it change. My 07 Avalanche has the 6.0L with AFM and with the aftermarket exhaust you can hear it drop to 4 cylinders.
My wifes Honda Accord has a active fuel management system that turns on and off cylinders as the load increases and decreases and you can feel it when driving the car, there is a very very slight jerk when it happens, drives me crazy but the wife can't even feel it.
