So opened up rear and in water channel between rubber and side fender there was a mouse.....
Whats the best way to deter....steel wool, copper wool diswasher ball, dryer sheets in car? Its going to get wet so dont want mess.
he crawled up from ground & was on both sides based on droppings...so want to prevent

I am not sure how to help you on this one but for once in my life I find a cat might be useful rather than the self-serving entities they normally are.

I second the RatZapper. Have one in my garage and catch a mouse a month during the summer when the garage is open a lot of the time. Still searching for my first pack rat as it keeps nesting in my pickup engine bay. Has blocked the trucks CAI twice and built a nest in front of the passenger side firewall of my F-550.
Hate them rodents.

Here in Arizona....some use a Hav-a-heart....(it is a spring loaded live trap, doesn't kill)....and peanut butter in it for bait for the pack rats....also a smaller version for mice.....plus one has the sticky type and spring trap as other options....some here have also used mothballs....many are not sure if the smell deters or not....but it is sold at Ace Hardware in the pest section....but we have learned to ....move the vehicles around to keep the little critters on their toes, off guard and to confuse them as to which vehicle to nest in....Kidding:

Go to Wally World and buy a box of rat poison. Put the little box of poison in an inconspicuous place in the garage where the mouse will run, along a wall or underneath something. They will find it and no more mouse.

In our garage, moth ***** in a tupperware container with holes in the lid do a pretty fair job of repelling both mice and chipmunks. But they need to be replaced every 2-3 months and our garage smells like Grandma's closet.
We also use pet-proof poison baits, glue traps, and two kinds of snap traps. As a system, they all work together.

this works for me. Just taped a packet onto the top of my battery to keep the critters out of of the cabin filter. I have already replaced 2 filters in winters past. Since I have been using the mouse magic -no problem
