check engine light?
I got a check engine light last night leaving from work.. No other DIC or indications of any kind. I had to stop for gas and it seemed the gas cap was loose. It tightened fine after filling. Still have check engine light today.
If it was the gas cap does it take awhile to go away?
Any other ideas what it could be?
I guess if it doesn't go away by Monday I will take it in.

Depending on your model year and mileage, it might be under warranty?

It's only a year old, bought new Oct last year, so I will take to the dealer and make them read the codes if it doesn't go away by next week. Besides, if I take it in for anything, they wash it for free. They don't do as good a job as I do, but my back has been bothering me for the last few weeks.

If it's that new you should be able to hit your Onstar button and they can tell you what area to check and there's no charge for it.

Assuming it is the gas cap and you either put a new one on or remove the old one and reinstall with a twist without pushing down on it, it will take 12 engine start cycles before the CEL turns off by itself from my past experiences with the gas cap on my 06Z. Disconnecting the negative cable on the battery for 10 or 15 minutes should turn the CEL off immediately as you are rebooting the ECM by doing that. Of course going to AutoZone and have them read the code for you is a good idea also.

It's nice to lower your window before disconnecting the battery, so you can get back in the car without forcing the glass past the weatherstripping. After reconnecting, re-index the windows. The TPMS might also show xx tire pressures until you drive around the block.

Thanks for the comment. I always lower my windows all the way when working on the car, so never got to experience the "automatic reindex" you described.

12 cycles does not mean starting and then turning off the engine 12 times. There must be drive time in between. Relax and don't worry about it...give it time.

C'mon guys...everyone should own an OBDII scanner by now. You can get one for less than $20! Here's one.
Do some of you guys really drive your $50K Corvette to AutoZone and then ask for a free OBDII code reading!?!
Good Lord I wouldn't let an AutoZone employee touch the door handle on my car.
