Default Battery Charging

Hello Vette People, I have 2 questions concerning proper charging technics during the winter months. When using a trickle charger or a standard battery charger do you have to disconnect the battery from the cars cables? How long should the trickle charger be left on?

Thanks, Bob

A battery tender, like the one made by CTEK, is preferable to a trickle charger. Standard chargers and trickle chargers can overheat the barttery and shorten it's life. I have the CTEK 3300 and don't worry about leaving it connected for long period of times.

No need to disconnect the cables. A true trickle charger is not a good idea because the trickle is seldom exactly right, it's either over charging or under charging the battery. Most people use a tender or maintainer, which charges at a slow rate and adjusts the charge to get the battery topped up but not overcharged. Some normal chargers will work that way also, but I'd want to verify very precisely that it won't over charge.

That's what I use leave it hooked up all winter no harm done. Don't forget to top off the tank and put some extra air in the tires. Use stabilizer if you wish.
