I have an 07 3lt with the nav unit and would like to install a new head unit to upgrade the sound system. I have two questions what system would improve the sound and nav system and will an non GM system still work on the HUD display? Oh one other question will the factory bose speakers work or should they be upgraded as well and with what. Any information will be appreciated.
First, you would get better response to this if you posted it in the Audio/Electronics section.
No current aftermarket system will work with the HUD. I have heard that there may be a Kenwood head unit that is being developed that would work with the HUD but I am not sure of that.
You should contact Dennis of DoubleDMods. He is a very knowledgeable forum vendor that can answer your questions and possibly make some suggestions.
He has very good prices on equipment as well.
I just did a complete audio system upgrade and it wasn't cheap but I really like the sound it puts out now. Crystal clear even at high volumes.
Most recommend changing the blose speakers when upgrading their system. Any current aftermarket nav will not work with the HUD but that is changing soon sometime this year Kenwood is coming out with a unit I was told that will work with the HUD. But generally speaking any aftermarket nav will perform and sound better then the stock unit which is so outdated.
I think the best recommendation is just tell you to contact Dennis at DoubleDMods. Great service and reputation around here. Here's one of his posts for contact info:
2013 9-Speaker Sound System. I think for stock system, it is quite acceptable.
Now, the Bose system that came in my 2000 FRC just plain sucked. And Bose is supposed to be a standard of quality? Hmmm. I think GM missed the mark on that one. Times have changed. And I am either getting too old to notice any audible difference, or too old to care anymore.
I'm going to watch this thread, I need some ideas on better speakers for my car. The Bose just don't sound all that good. If the entire thing has to be replaced then I'll also be considering that option.
Contact Double D Mods. They sold me my Kenwood dnx 6990 for my car. Plus a set of speakers.Cannot go wrong with them. Forum member Markcz is also a big help. They are both in the audio section.
come on guys back to the subject, any ideas on a replacement system.
Contact Dennis,
Nothing right now interfaces with the HUD but Kenwood is working on it, Dennis knows all the details look in the Audio section he explains it all.
Kenwood has the best Nav its Garmin based,
Pioneer has the best user interface, works great with the iphone.
I have the pioneer Z120 in my 08, got it from Dennis. Replace the Head unit, speakers, and put in a new amp you will be completely happy.
I suggest starting by replacing the speakers, possibly adding an amp, and sticking with your factory head unit. Those steps just might give you what you're looking for without having to give up your HUD compatibility, steering wheel controls, or factory look.
Too bad you did not take advantage of the NIB Kenwood I sold last week on the forum. A member got a killer deal.
Anyway, you can talk to Dennis as the others have said. He will set you up and is a great guy.
One word of advice. Right now, Kenwood is between model years. There are roomers about a wifi based radio coming out next year. Just beware that when I was looking for a head unit this time last year, I "pre-ordered" a 2012 model and had to wait for a couple months for it to be delivered. Well, I ended up loosing a couple months of warrenty that way. Also the main reason I decided to go with the 2012 Kenwood was it was supposed to have GM LAN interface during the summer of 2012. We are still waiting. The just announced that the interface will NOT work with the HUD - which is one of the main reasons to have it and it probably won't until they release the 2014 models. Don't be sucked in by Kenwood vapor ware. And on top of the insult to injury, Kenwood removed a bunch of nice feature that were present in the 2011 model!
The other thing to consider is getting a remanufactured head unit off fleabay. I have gotten a couple of those and had good luck with them. About half the price of retail if you can live without the warranty.
