Default keeping hood open

I came from an 04 to an 09 Z06 and the struts barely keep the hood open on the 09. Is there something I'm missing? the new ones dont have any kind of lock do they? Maybe need new struts? Help a brother out here. Thanks

Sounds like you need new struts. I've never had any issues with any of my 3 C6's in that department.

Sounds like the struts are giving up the ghost. The stock hoods are pretty light, we found that out when we swapped hoods. I'd try some new one's!

I did buy the extended warranty for the car, anyone knows if something like this would be covered?

The struts should be covered the hinges wouldn't be covered. If you have GMPP just check the exclusions list that came with your contract or the one shown on their website. If the item isn't on the list it is covered. You can also ask the dealer.

Maybe you have too many coats of polish on the hood.

I bought some hard plastic spacers that snap over the rods on the struts. Keeps the hood open during a show. Had some problems with the wind blowing the hood shut.

Well on the C5 that could have easily been the case
Haven't had the chance to get more than a couple on this one yet so I need to get prepared.

I did call my dealer and he said no problem they would take care of it, wont be for a couple of more months though

Thanks again for the help guys

Mine is the same way. Stays up but barely. The lift cylinders cost about $30.00 each and look easy to replace. However I'm not sure how to seperate the ball joint at the hood.

They look very easy to replace, I'd buy some new ones and install them yourself. Looks like a no brainer.

It only takes one strut to go bad out of the two to fail to keep the hood up. One of the struts on my 06Z went bad at nearly 5 years old. Both left and right hand struts are the same part number. If you want to go cheap as I did since I was about to sell the car for my ZR1, just buy one strut and replace one side. If that isn't the bad side, put the original strut back on and change out the other side with the new. A spring clip is all that holds each strut end onto a socket ball so it is rather easy once you see that. Not likely that both struts are bad. If the problem eventually occurs again, then you know to replace the other strut next.

As everyone else has said you have one or two struts that are going bad/weak. My 09's are both fine but I did have that issue on my 04 and the hood on that car is carbon fiber and they still would not hold the hood up. Replaced the struts and all's good.

I agree...did the same - constructed plastic spacers from 1/2" hot water pipe to snap over strut rods and painted red to match under hood stuff. They are great for shows as stated. But I will need to replace them shortly...right side giving up.

There's a small clip holding the ball in place. A small jewelers flat tip will work. Easy...
