There are painted wheels, polished wheels (that are clear coated) and chrome wheels.
If you scuff the painted ones they can be sanded/filed and repainted and will look fine.
If you scuff the 'polished' wheels, they too can be sanded/filed/polished and they will look like new. Some people can do that without stripping and refinishing them with a clear coat.
Chrome wheels can also be repaired but they will need to be re-plated.
I forgot to mention that these are all 'factory' C6 Corvette wheels. It's hard to tell the polished ones from the chrome ones unless they are parked next to each other. The chrome ones have a better 'mirror' finish and the polished ones are just a bit (not much) cloudy....

Perfect explanation. I would add that the 2005 through early 2008 polished wheels (5 spokes), usually would not take as good a polish as the later 2008 through 2010 polished Gumby style.
