I hit a street sign at about 15mph - the front bumper is very messed up, along with one of my headlights. I'm at fault.
I noticed that the headlight was pulled out of where the fender attaches to the body - there's now a slightly smaller gap between the fender and the bottom of the hood.
I filed a police report and an insurance claim - I have full coverage with a $500 deductible with allstate.
I'm going to get it looked at by an adjuster, but I have some questions. I've never dealt with insurance claims before.
- will they pay to correct the fender position, even if it's barely noticeable?
- my car is a rare kind of red - will they take into account the difficulty/cost of finding a matching oem headlight assembly?
- I have the choice of going through one of allstates partner shops, or selecting my own. If I select my own, can I take the cash and repair everything on my own, getting parts off ebay and saving any leftover cash?
- Can I challenge their quote with one from a Chevrolet dealership?
- any other advice before I have an agent look at it?
If the car is financed then the payor on the check may be made to the bank and have to be endorsed over to the body shop upon the banks inspecting the repairs are complete , if you own the car outright then you can take the check and do with it what you want, i would think the car would have to be repaired back to factorys specs and a good body shop can color match any color.
I would advise against letting any insurence affiliated shop doing the repairs. They are going to cut as many corners as they can to save the insurence co. money. Who ever gives you an estimate for the repairs will take into consideration of all damages for the cost of those repairs. Once a repair shop starts the work, they should contact your insurence co. if there is more repairs needed than what was originaly seen. Hope this helps.

Best of luck, a lot will depend on your insurance company and the type of actual coverage you have. Some coverage only allow for after market parts, while other will allow for OEM parts. I had a bad experience with a insurance company and did what anyone should do when not happy, find a new insurance company. Remember just because we love our Vettes they just view it as claim, any old car. The lesson I learned was on my Vettes and Harley's I ensure them for a stated vaule and can have the shop of my choice fix them with OEM parts. Coverage cost a little more but if there is an issue you have the confidence your car will be like it was before.
Yes, get 3 independent quotes from shops you want to work on your car. The Chevrolet dealer may not be the best choice. Check for someone that knows Vetts and other sports cars.
If you don't know of a good shop contact corvette club in area to see who they recommend. But be careful and check them out as you would any other shop. Thats a 3500 Dollar hit or more.Oh and like was posted get your own estimate at chev dealer.

I hit it because a dog ran into the road and instinct took over. I think I love my pups too much.
So you swerved and lost control. That's not loving pups too much, that's knee-jerk reaction due to lack of experience.
Unless you love dogs so much, that you would rather put your life at risk for a random dog than hit it.

I'm sure he appreciates your advice at this point.
We've had two Corvettes repaired by the shop recommended by our insurance company (State Farm). The advantage for us was that they had a trusted relationship and didn't need to get additional approvals if there was hidden damage, so things went quicker.
Both times, I told the shop that I wanted new GM parts, and would pay any additional cost out of my pocket if necessary. Both times, the shop said they wouldn't use anything other than new GM parts on a Corvette. Repairs were done nicely.
So, an insurance-recommended shop may do good work, but not all of them will do good work.
I'd have to agree with Nick. And there is no bigger dog/animal lover than me but at least here in the mountains, swerving to miss an animal can mean death. It happened up here before, people swerving to miss a squirrel, they lose control and go off the highway and roll down the mountain side. Short of it being an elephant (LOL) I wont swerve for an animal unless I'm at 5 mph or less
