Can anyone tell me if there is some sort of setting that will allow me to see which gear i'm in when I use my paddle shifter on my 2006 C6 automatic. The only place I can see which gear i'm in is by looking at my heads-up display. A coworker has a 2007 C6 and he can see his current gear where the odometer is, right above the steering column. This is my first Vette and i've only had it for a short time and it has never come up anywhere except the heads-up display.I would appriciate any advise.
Best place to have it is in the HUD. You have both the tach and the gear indicator right in front of you that way you can keep your eyes on the road. That way you don't have to look down at a critical time (remember at 60 mph the car is traveling 88 ft/sec). I haven't seen the gear selection display in a Vette but my 08 Malibu has it in the DIC which is too low for using the paddles.
gp56 - No he doesn't have a HUD. I really don't want to use mine either but I have to use it just for that one reason....to see what gear i'm currently in.

Thanks you for replying
If there is no HUD, then the gear will display in the DIC above the steering column. If there is a HUD, then you can have another display there (I find having transmission fluid temp really useful, and have the oil temp display in the HUD).
If you want to have your car function like your friend's, you can take your car to a dealer and they can put the DIC into a non-HUD mode. It takes a tech-II tool to do this. I know because I had an aftermarket HUD put in and I had it programmed the other way, to enable to the DIC to work like it would in a car with a factory HUD.

I have a factory HUD on a 2011 GS. I tried several combinations, (starting off in S, then in D, switching to S, using the paddles before and after putting it in S, pushing the fuel, gauge, trip, options buttons, switched to different HUD screens, etc...) could not get it to repeat the gear display in the DIC. But as you see above, my car will do it, just can't seem to find out how to force it.
I have the HUD and the only time I've seen the gear selection in my DIC is during the following conditions:
1) Transmission is in S mode
2) I've already started using the paddles
3) I'm using the stock navigation for a route
Using the route mode of the navigation, when a turn is indicated by the nav, the gear selection display on the HUD is replaced with a turn display. The current gear selection is then displayed on the DIC. As soon as the nav sees that I have made the turn, the HUD will again display the gear selection and the DIC goes blank until the nav needs the HUD display again.
Lets stated what year you have when you post where it shows and if you have HUD. I have an '07 3LT so I have HUD. It shows only in the HUD and only when in Sport Mode and I have pushed on or pulled the paddle not in the Drive mode. It will appear in the DIC if I have the Nav guidance system on and the system is advising me on something.
For a non-HUD equipped car, it will show in the DIC. I can not say where it shows and when it shows on later models then mine, I do believe there were some changes in '08 or '09.
I think the HUD is the best location, as you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see what gear you are in.
Looks like HUD cars show the gear indicator in the HUD and non HUD cars show it on the DIC.
I did not have the HUD in my car but installed it myself a couple years ago and I get the gear indicator both in the HUD and on the DIC.
So my take
OEM HUD = gear indication in HUD
Non OEM HUD = gear indication in DIC
Aftermarket HUD = gear indication in both HUD and DIC

That is not it. I have a 2011 GS, 4LT (Included HUD) and I have the gear indicator in the HUD and it appeared a couple times in my DIC. (See my photo below). What I am trying to figure out is what triggers it to appear in the DIC. I can't seem to get it to repeat. I even tried turning on the Navi, but that did not do it either.

Our 2009 is the same, except I haven't checked if the gear re-appears in the HUD after completing the turn..
