Default TPMS question

Hey guys, my TMPS on my 05 is intermintently showing 0psi on one of the tires. Im planning on switching out the entire TPMS on all 4. I know that the 2010 and up has a self calibrating TMPS and where the older models would require a tool to do so.
My question is , could I buy the 2010 and up TPMS be compatible with my 05 ??? or is it that Im stuck with buying the older model and have the dealer calibrate it ?? Thanks

there was a frequency change starting in 2010. 2010 had 314.9 i think and before it was 315mhz. close enough that after programming whey worked for a short time then would drop out. I am taking others word for this and dealerships and after market suppliers. Thats what they reported at the time. (i never actually measured the mhz for them myself)

i do not know if other switches also had a freq change. so i cant say.

•2005-2009 require a TPMS tool; they use a gray sensor GM part# 25758220

p.s. i spent several evenings researching this question, to find an actual GM document showing what freq changes were made over the years, i couldnt find any and gave up

my '09 does it when the weather changes ... it usually goes away after the tires warm up.

I cannot answer your question. Sorry. But if I may add...My new 2010 coupe has done this since day one. Purchased on Dec 10, 2010 brand new. The dealer has had great difficulty in fixing this. Been in several times. This time they are replacing the main piece. Already changed out both rear TPMS. Will find out next week. Crossing fingers. Good luck to you my friend.

They are not compatible. Here's an excerpt from an answer BEZ06 gave someone else:

First of all, I hope you got the correct sensors for your car!!! The 2005-2009 C6 used one model sensor, and the 2010 and newer uses a different model. The sensors are different and you MUST have the correct one for your year model. For your 2010 you need the green sensors with GM Part# 15268606. If you got the gray sensors that were used in the 2005-2009 C6, they will not work in your 2010.

2010s don't self learn either, still need a tool.

You'll have to stick with TPMS sensors compatible with your '05 computer...there's no way to get newer sensors to communicate with your older computer.

The good news is that if you have a Discount Tire around, they will usually program your sensors for FREE if you ask them. That's how I used to handle these situations before I bought my own TPMS tool.

As others have said, you can't use any sensors except the ones specified for the model year - the 2005-2009 uses one sensor, and the 2010-2013 uses a different sensor. They aren't compatible/interchangeable!!!!

All our sensors for U.S./Canada spec cars transmit on 315 mHz. Euro spec cars transmit on 434 mHz (at least the 2005-2009 European C6, I'm not sure about the 2010-2013). The 434 mHz Euro sensors are orange.

The difference is the data stream that is transmitted by the sensors is different. The 2010-2013 sensors include a temperature, but of course the C6 doesn't display that in the DIC. The same sensors are used in a number of other GM vehicles, and some may display the temp - I dunno.

Actually, there is another sensor that works in the 2005-2009 that can be programmed into the TPMS with a magnet, but they were discontinued after about two months of the 2005 model year production (about July or August 2004). They were used in the 2004 XLR, but also discontinued in 2005 when the current gray sensor was put into the cars. They are very rare - there is ONE that has been listed on eBay for several months for around $35.

Butt.....if anybody really wants a set, I have 5 of them (1 is in the unopened plastic shipping bag, and the other 4 came out of an old early C6 or probably an XLR). They all check out as "Batt OK" when I do a diagnostic check on them with my TPMS tool.

If anybody wants them, $120 shipped four a set of 4.

There are also 2 different sensors that can be used in the 2010-2013. One is green, and the other is black.

The black one must be triggered by a TPMS tool to program them into the TPMS.

The green ones will trigger with either a TPMS tool, or by changing air pressure in the tire. So, if you have a couple sets of wheels/tires/sensors for your 2010 or newer C6, you don't need a TPMS tool.

I've got a couple sets of used green sensors if anybody with a 2010-2013 wants them. $80 shipped for a set of 4, and a diagnostic check with my TPMS tool shows they are all in great shape.

Bottom line -
  • All C6 sensors for North American C6's transmit on 315 mHz, but they send out different data depending on 2005-2009 or 2010-2013
  • They are not compatible - you must use the sensors for your model year
  • The TPMS computer can only hold 4 sensor ID#'s, so if you put in new sensors or swap wheels you must program the new set of sensors into your TPMS (there are some new sensors that came out recently, and they can be cloned with the ID#'s from your current sensors, so that when you swap on a different set of wheels you don't need to do anything
  • The gray and black sensor can only be triggered with a TPMS tool. The green sensors can be triggered with a tool or by changing air pressure. There are some very rare magnetically triggered ones for the 2005-2009.

You can always buy the triggering tool and go through the learning procedure yourself. Beats paying rapacious stealership prices.

On my most recent set of tires the imbecile at the tire shop didn't shut the car down properly (2005 with MN6) so it wouldn't go into "learn" mode. So I took the $60 they were going to charge me for the relearn procedure and put it towards an ATEQ VT15 triggering tool. Works great!

I would only add that no C6 TPMS system is 'self calibrating'. There have been instances here on the forum where new wheels and tires are installed with new TPMS sensors and the owner says that they must have 'programmed themselves' because everything is working fine. In reality, the car is still reading the TPMS sensors that are in the old wheels that are stacked up in the corner of the garage. Magnet, tool, or pressure drop, all new sensors need programming to the car.
