Default Question on Changing Diff & Tranny Fluid

Hi All,

I'm looking to change out both my tranny and diff. fluid later today. I see that I will need a fluid pump to get the new oil into the car.

Now my question is... do I need two pumps, one for each fluid? Or, can one pump be used for both? I am worried about whether the residual fluid from the first change would cause ill effects on the second change.

Would it work to purge the first fluid from the pump by priming it with some of the second fluid? Or should I just quit being a cheapazz and use two pumps?

Do your tranny first. Then just pump a tad bit of the diff fluid through your pump first before filling the pumpkin.

However, if you don't, I doubt that little bit of ATF left over in the pump will do any harm to the pumpkin.

I'd go for two pumps since they're pretty cheap, but that's just me. After use, put them in separate ziplok bags and label them.

Be sure to remove or at least loosen the fill plugs before doing the drain plug, occasionally someone gets the old stuff out and can't get the new fluid in.

This is one of my two golden rules with fluid changes... Great way to avoid a silly problem!

My other rule is, never put all your new fluid in before checking that the drain plug is installed. I made this discovery after watching my brother fill his engine with six quarts of oil before learning he had left the drain plug out.

And thanks for the responses... Looks like it's not a major deal either way.

Looks like you may already have done the job, but as stated; if it's just one pump then do the trans first and I doubt if a couple of teaspoons of trans fluid (probably the same weight or at least close...) would ever affect the diff.

My 2 cents.

edit- In fact, come to think of it, my WRX uses the same Amsoil fluid for both applications... I know Corvettes don't but it's still very similar.
