Default 427 Vert a 'bargain'

Several months ago, I sold my '09 Z06 and bought a 427 Convertible. I had been toying with the idea of getting a new Z06, because they had features available that were not on mine, including MSRC. As I looked, I couldn't find many Z06s to start with (no surprise), and I was a bit turned off by how much a car essentially the same as what I had would cost. Even with the discounts being offered, it seemed like more than I wanted to pay.

So, after some consideration, I ended up with the 427. Still a lot of money, but it is much different from what I had. Really happy with the decision...

Anyway, I was glancing through the Corvette Black Book and happened to notice that for 2013, the base Z06 was only $325 less than the base 427. Given the normal spread for a convertible, that was a surprise. And the 427 includes such things as MSRC, carbon fiber hood, 19s and 20s with the machined face wheels, etc, that are options on the Z06. In fact, optioned to a similar level, the Z06 is almost $4000 more than the 427.

The only thing missing from a 427 that is on the Z06 is the aluminum frame, so it seems the 427 is really quite the bargain!

Perhaps a bargain but, its a convertible, and not a track oriented machine as where the Z06 is. A 427 Vert might have the motor...but it's still not a Z06.

Yeah, but I already had a Z06 for more than 3 years and wanted something different...

Nothing wrong with your decision. I love the "427" but it's not a ZO6.

I love the 427 Convertible and it would be my choice of all the C6's if I could afford it. As far as being a bargain...that's debatable! Saw one the other day that listed for $93,4XX and that wasn't even with the 60th package or optional paint. Even if it sold for 80k it would be double what I paid for my new '12 Coupe with a few options last October.

That's why I put quotes around the 'bargain' in the title...

In a couple years, used 427s will be a bargain. I guess the term "bargain" needs a definition and I think it depends on a person's income. I guess I envy those who can afford them new.

I'm hoping their owners take good care of them and keep the mileage low so I can get one at a good price in a few yrs.

Don't think anyone here is saying that a 427 IS a Z06??? As far as "track oriented" There are 3 road courses in my area that allow qualified drivers to do HPDE/PDX/Lapping in C5/C6 verts... Agreed, most folks don't go buy a 'vert thinking "this is gonna be my track day toy" But, some DO end up on a track! Further i'd bet most Z's are not tracked that often... Love Z's, love 'verts and targa tops more....Gotta have that "open air" buffeting off my bald head!

Most vettes in general probably aren't tracked; however, the point I was bringing to the table, was that a 427 convertible is just that..a convertible with a 427. The OP was contemplating getting a new Z06, although he realized the prices made his 427 vert seem like a "bargain." The difference in both cars, one has to take into consideration. A Z06 is the track weapon that was developed first, unlike the 427 vert that was pieced together here and there from the parts bin.

I've been "buried" in a car before.

But seriously, any owners of silver or CG 427s; take good care of them and keep the miles low. I'll get back to you in 3-4 years.

After a more than five year hiatus, I was buying a vette this year. i looked at used, new gs verts, and whimsically the 427. at the end of the day, the 427 made the most sense to me. i felt it was optioned as i wanted, and the spread over the gs vert was near enough for me to spend the extra bucks. i didnt need it, i wont track it, but found the "parts bin composition" and single year of production to be appealing, not for some resale valuation when i am old, but simply as a cool factor in my mind. regardless of what others may think about it, the package appealed to me, and was financially doable.

I now have a fun weekend car that is paid for, has a nice warranty, and plenty of power for me. In my eyes, it was in fact a good buy for everything you get. for the ten guys who go to the track every weekend, it isnt for them, and thats cool. for the rest of us who bought it for the sheer enjoyment as a reward for a job well done each day, it is exactly what we wanted. there is no right or wrong vette to own, each has its merits and the owner usually loves it.

Exactly.

If you like what you bought, does it matter?
