Default 2005 Acting Strange

I have a 2005 Coupe with 44,000 miles. Over the past six months or so there has been two times where pressing the start button results in the gauges starting up thing but the car will not start. After a few minutes of pressing the lower half of the start button then pressing the start button it will start. When it does start there are numerous warning messages on the DIC stating Traction Control, Active Handling, column lock, and other systems are not working and service immediately. The check engine light is on also. But the care will drive at normal rpm's and speed. After two or three start cycles all the warnings and check engine light are gone. Also, a couple of times the car starts normally but has several of the warning messages on, but after driving it, turning it off, then restarting it a while later it is fine. I believe the battery is good. Does this sound like it needs a reflash or something like that? Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I would start with pulling the codes. Even though the warning lights are off, they should still be in memory.

The codes will give you a starting place and might tell you everything you need to know. No, there is no "reflash" for random non-starting, check engine lights, active handling, column lock, and various other random messages.

BTW, you say the battery is good but the variety of symptoms you describe all point to a dead battery. That is exactly what you get when the voltage is low from letting the car sit too long.

My 2006 did the exact same thing. The battery was 6 years old so I figured it was time for a replacement anyway so I installed a new one. I have not had the issue since replacing the battery.

if its a manual trans you need to get the column lock eliminator from vic at corvettes houston or corvette world houston what ever. only talk to vic though he makes it the rest of them our idiots and crooks. the new owners are destroying that place.

The battery and its' connections are the first, most likely and easiest to check.

Those are simply common codes thrown with any dying or dead battery.

The reflash has to do with DBS. But with DBS the battery is stone cold dead and even the gauges don't work.

If the battery does indeed check out fine, then it's the column lock failing. Assuming MN6 tranny. I would get the eliminator for any '05 MN6 as it's only a matter of time and cycling. I replaced my column lock before the eliminator came out. It was over $600.

If I had an '05, my first mod would have been the eliminator. The fact that they did away with the lock in '06 shows that they knew it was going to be a problem. It was a major change. Think of the problems that GM has never addressed...but they addressed this one.

Haven't gone through any issue with it so I can't chime in on your starting problem, but let us know how the battery check pans out...

Default I have an answer

Took the Corvette to the shop today and they pulled the codes. Found that every sensor and system in the car had failed!!! Then they load tested the battery and found it to to be bad. The battery had been replaced in Aug 2010 with an OEM Delco battery. I had had the battery on a tender each winter and was a little suprised it was bad. So, you all were right about the battery being the problem. Thanks for all of your input.

Thanks for returning to the thread and letting us know the outcome. I'm glad that the new battery solved the problem for you.

That's good news!

And from the Ounce-Of-Prevention Dept: CHECK YOUR BATTERY TO SOLENOID CONNECTION!!

It sucks that it was something as simple as a loose positive battery cable, but as expensive as replacing the entire starter and cable... I'd recommend every C6 owner to at least check the connection so they can catch it before the vibrations damage the solenoid post.

Good to hear it was a simple battery. Diagnosing electrical issues is costly!

Same here I have 2005 coupe with 49,000 miles except its an auto. Still on original 2005 battery and started to use tender one year ago.
Glad this was a simple fix.

From what I've seen/discussed, the AC Delco batteries last forever, but when they go, they go out with a bang.

I hope the new AC Delco batteries are made as good if not better than my original 2005 factory AC Delco battery that came in car. When this one goes out I'll go for the AC Delco. Seems to be thought that the later model Corvettes batteries fail and or don't last as long as early ones.

I finally gave up on the Delco Batterys and went with the Optima. No problems since.
