I have a 2005 vert with the l2 package. Bose speakers. I asked the dealership if I found a factory nav system could they install it. When they ran the vin, they said it couldn't be done. Is that right?

"l2 package"? There's nothing even close to that. If you're referring to the 2005 "Preferred Equipment Packages", on convertibles they were 1SA and 1SB. (There was also a 1SX on coupes.) All 2005s with factory navigation (whether coupe or convertible) had the 1SB package; navigation was a stand-alone option that could be ordered only on cars also equipped with 1SB.
I'd prefer the paper map myself. At least it can be carried in the house or hotel room to plot the route or to make changes on the fly.
My road trips always include an atlas, individual state maps, a garmin GPS, a cell phone GPS, a notebook computer, and usually a wife who tells me where to go.

We have all kinds of aftermarket options for you that contain everything you will need to install and we can also prewire them for simple installation as well.

Does she also tell you when to turn the turn signal off and honk the horn and ask how fast you are going and oh theirs a cop geeze you would think I've never driven before and I'm 7 years older than the expert. I have to explain myself If I make a sudden move as to why big whoops.
Oh sorry just venting about the shotgun rider.

I did mean 1sb package. I wonder why they said it could not be done?
Because your car does not have the GPS antenna.
For the dealer to install the GPS antenna they would have to take the entire dash apart. That's how the service manual states replacement.
Luckily you do not really need to put the antenna in the factory position. You can put it near to the factory position and it will still work. Use Velcro and it won't budge.
Just install it your self, when you turn the vehicle on the nav screen will lock up with the theft deterrent.
All the GM dealer has to do is hook up the tech 2 and erase the vin in the nav unit and load yours. Done.
I just rigged a Zumo 665 to my the C6 LT1 recently using Garmin's motorcycle cradle dedicated to that model. It's been in use for some time on the Harley and I can now transfer the GPS with one button and no hassling with cables. There is no blocking of visibility and the angle of viewing is good. The result was excellent for my needs, shown below, and doing this also provided 12V car power as well as MP3 and Bluetooth phone support.
I fabricated a bracket from a sheet of 2mm-thick SS and mounted it with 3M Dual-Lock (similar to Velcro) in the .40" gap between the WS molding and removable top. See more details here. One caveat: This may not work well for those who need to remove the top and use the GPS, as the top is part of the securing mechanism. When I remove the top, which I don't do often, I will simply pull the GPS, too, as the cradle holds fine without the top and GPS mounted. A clip of some sort might rectify this limitation but I haven't gotten around to looking into that yet.
OK... Have you "experienced" the C6 Nav system? Humm... well, it's Lacking to say the least.
No more lacking than any other Nav System. Carry a map and don't trust any of them and you will get along fine. Trust one of them and you could find yourself in a life threatening situation.
