Our 2006's engine light has been an issue since day one. For awhile, reseating the gas cap after fill ups worked. Then it didn't and it was replaced under warranty. 2-3 years ago it came on and never went off. The dealer service department replaced the cap again on our dime. And then again their dime when the latest change didn't solve the problem. They then said dunno. Time to sell the car and it is now a big time immediate deal. We could get a tool and reset it hoping it won't come back on until it has a new owner. But not our style. A search didn't turn up much.

Anyone?
Maybe this is too simple, but have you tried disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes & then reconnecting? Sometimes doing that allows the ECM to reset itself.
You need to pull the codes and see if it is indeed a problem with the gas cap. If it is, then get a new Stant cap at an auto parts store and quit putting on the oem cap. If it is something else, the code will tell you what that problem is. Resetting the code and hoping it stays gone until it has a new owner is a lousy thing to do.

They have done the codes and insist there are none save the gas cap. Which all acknowledge doesn't fix the problem.
I'll go to the auto parts store and get a Slant gas cap. Minimum it will be cheaper than the $55 part the dealer installed. I didn't see them do it, but sure they got chuckle out of that price.
I thought I got a letter from GM several years ago about problem gas caps. Mine is a 2005 model. I want to say they extended the warranty on the gas cap for a total of ten years. It has been a long time since I got that letter and I hope I am not giving you wrong information. I don't know if the 2006 model is affected, if it is, you should get a refund from your dealer.

Thanks for the idea.
Couldn't there be some other air leak that the system interprets as a gas cap problem?
I would not drive my car with a CEL on and not knowing precisely why. If you don't have a code reader nor the tools/mechanical ability to repair it, take it to a reputable mechanic. There's a good possibility it's a cheap fix if it seems to run fine.

You need to find a new dealer. If the issue is a smog problem the warranty is much longer than the factory regular warranty. Check your owners manual. It gives a complete list of all warranted parts. It's at least eight years. Some states are different.

Only two Chevrolet dealers in town. Both are perplexed.

Find another one. If this is a warranty issue it would be worth it to drive to a neighboring town. Check your owners manual first to see if it is still under the emissions warranty.
From my C5 days, I have always "clicked" the cap 3 clicks when putting it on. It has worked for me. When ever my wife has filled it up, and just clicked it any old way, the light would come on. That is the cheapest "try" that I can think of.

Giving us a general idea of your location would allow others on the forum the option to suggest better dealers. You might also get on the regional board and ask about dealers that have good Corvette Mechanics.
I had this problem and replaced the gas cap ($22) at local dealership. I was told to drive it about 50 miles and the code would reset.....and if not bring it back
After a few days, I purchased a code reader at my local auto part store and although the DIC was displaying "Check Gas Cap" it was also throwing codes. In my case I had a P0449 and a P0455. P0449 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction and P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)
I tried resetting my codes, but they would come back within seconds. The next step is purchase a new Fuel Vent Solenoid from your local dealer. In my case it was about $25. GM also recommends an upgraded harness ($30)...but it was not needed, so I will return it.
