My corvette just died out of nowhere. I had the "service charging system" come up a few times. But every time I took it to the mechanic, they said the car was fine. A few days ago I tried to start it and nothing. I heard a click and that was it. After a few minutes my brother came and he tried to start it and the car started. The car was fine for a day then I went to the gas station 2 days ago, after I put gas it did it again. I heard a click but couldn't start it. I went to the gas station yesterday and it started, so I took it to the mechanic. But I don't know if they are going to find anything. Have anyone had this happened before??
Since you said you've had recent DIC "service charging system" messages, that narrows the list.
Clean the battery terminals and fully charge the battery first to see if it continues to have the problem. Watch the DIC for the voltage. If the voltage occasionally drops below 11, the most likely problem is intermittant alternator output. If the voltage steadily drops, it's a battery issue. If the voltage never drops, you already cured the problem by cleaning the terminals.
It's possible to be something else, but these tests are free and save you from simply spending time and money swapping parts until something works again.
Thank you very much!! It did sound as the first post. The mechanic told me there was a completely burned out cable in the starter. I'm glad its fixed now.
