Default Check Engine Warning

I know this is here somewhere. I just didn't find it.
I have an 08 Z06, 7200 miles and the check engine light just came on.
What are the steps to find out what the problem is.
I know I have to find the codes first. I think my owners manual says take it to your dealer. I also know what you guys would say about that!
Will someone please give me the link or let me know how to get into the system.
Thanks
Karl

You don't have to take the car to the dealer to have codes read. Several auto parts chains might let you use a scanner/code reader for free and give you the code. Or, you can buy a code reader at most auto parts stores, walmart, etc. and do it yourself. I have an Innova reader but there are other brands. Mine was about $70. Basically, you plug it into the port on the drivers side of the car in accessory mode and it will display generic code(s). Once that is done you can look up what the code means by googling or searching on this forum with a possible solution. It is not that difficult and I prefer having my own code reader vs. going to the dealer or an auto parts store. The problem with the generic check engine light is you don't know if its a minor problem like a loose gas cap or a major issue unless you have or use a scanner.

Thanks Steve. I thought I saw a post saying I could get the code by going through various steps on my DIC. I guess not.

No problem. I think I have read that the C5's allowed you to get the info that way but not the C6

take her in . ..
Alternatively, you can get a cheap code reader at your local auto parts store to pull the codes of the ODBC -

A check engine lamp usually means a malfunction with emissions system issue.

All of my gauges are good. I thought the light was always fuel and emissions related and more than likely not a catastrophic situation?
I plan on driving the rest of the weekend. Is this a bad idea?

You know it could also be the gas cap check it. If after a few start and stop cycles the lamp may go out.

Just got back from AutoZone. They scanned it.
P0430
"Catalyst efficiency low- bank 2"
Probable cause:
*Catalytic converter defective*
Failure possibly due to:
Engine misfire
Large vacuum leak
Engine oil leakage into exhaust -valve guide seals, piston rings
I have read extensively about the valve guide problem with the LS7. I don't remember anyone mentioning anything about a check engine light before their catastrophic problems.
Does anyone remember a check engine light before valve / valve guide problems.
I will get a "wiggle test" soon.
Any comments on the Catalytic Converter ? I sure hope I don't have a valve problem. The car runs great and makes no noise.
Thanks

Hey Karl,

In reference to your valve concern please read the statement put out by Evan from Customer Care:

LS7 Valve guide issue summary:
• Affects a small, number of '08, 09 ’10 and ’11 Z06’s
• GM discovered the condition through our cylinder head warranty data involving a very small percentage of our vehicles.
• Through inspection of returned heads, it was determined that a machining error in the valve guide had occurred at our head supplier.
• The quality issue has been contained as of Feb 2011 with 100% inspection of all heads.
• The most common customer complaint has been excessive valve train noise.
However if the condition is not addressed, it could result in engine failure. To date, where this condition has been observed, it has occurred early in the vehicle life.
What customers need to know: They should drive and enjoy their vehicles without fear. If their car demonstrates this condition, they are likely to hear unusual valvetrain noise first. If you have a concern regarding this issue on your personal vehicle feel free to contact me through private message on this forum and we will work to assist in resolving your concern.

If you plan on going to the dealership let me know so I can assist! Private message me and we can get your concerns addressed

There's a TSB to update the PCM to correct the condition, if, the cat is working and isn't failed.
