Default Why?

When cruising at freeway speeds in 6th gear ( with 4:10's ) coolant might read 196-198 at 1700 rpm. I down shift to 5th keeping same mph with rpm reading 2600 maybe and coolant temp drop to 189 with 30 seconds. And will stay there. Running a 180 stat.

My pea sized brain figures that at higher rpm more heat hence higher coolant temps. Hearing is bad so I am not sure if the fan is kicking on with the higher rpm reading lowering the temp.

Explain for me Lucy........

Higher crank speed (RPM) = higher water pump RPM = more GPH coolant flow through the radiator = better cooling !

This is why I post a question on this forum before looking in the manual, the answer will be provided here on the forum before I get done flipping thru the pages in the manual...thanks Patsgarage and CF!

Thanks, makes sense now that I think about it as being a manual unit...just never really gave it thought with my limited experience under the hood.

Yup...same idea as why your car runs up to 220 when dilly dallying in idle traffic but yet u never get close to 200 when cooking at 60-70 on the highway. The almighty radiator my friend!
