There are a lot of times when autocrossing that your hands are all over the place and you still need to shift. The best way to do this is to have the practice of using the paddles. In time, you will know where the paddle is located just as one learns to shift a manual trans without looking and knowing what gear you're in by touch.
Here's an
where I shift between 1st & 2nd gear 4-5 times per lap for 5 laps total. Many times the shifts came in a corner. You just need to anticipate the shift lag or control any sidestep.
