Frequently I get a message telling me my Nav disk is not a Nav disk. If I eject the disk, sometimes it takes several attempts, the system recognizes the disk and performs normally. The disk is clean and appears undamaged. Has anyone else experienced this who might be able to share their fix? 2006 if it matters. Thank you.
Some have had success using air dusters that you would use on PC equipment, stick the little wand inside the opening and spray.
The car environment is a very dirty one for DVDs and the laser technology that reads them...it is very likely that dust on the lens is the problem here.
If there is anything I can look into for you please let me know! I think cclive maybe on to something. (I cannot provide technical advice, so that is not a diagnosis)

There is a problem with the 2012 single disc upgrade bombing at startup no matter how clean your Navigation setup is. It seems to fix itself after a slight delay.

That's the one the was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I just jerked out the OEM Nav and put in the Pioneer unit. I have a lot more goodies from that unit now and it's not $200 to update to a disk that won't run.
