Default C6/A4 Shifter Lockup

Finally just could not take the annoyance anymore of the intermittent Shifter Lockup so I made an appointment with Classic Chevrolet Sugarland for Monday morning to get it repaired. Getting ready for road trip to the DFW Area so I REALLY do not need the annoyance!

I had the same problem so I tied back the locking tab that is located under the shift boot. No more problems with it and I saved hundreds of dollars. Do a search and you will see photos on how it is done.

I just did mine last Sunday. Took less than an hour and no more worries.

Default D.i.r.t.f.o.o.t.

D.I.R.T.F.O.O.T.
Do It Right The First Time.
I have never been one for patch work fixes. Would rather spend the money to get it done right if I cannot fix it myself.
Besides that, Would not want to get that "I'M Stranded Again" phone call from my Wife.

Get ready to spend $400 or so to have your whole shifter replaced then. Thats the dealer solution.

Good write up EVRose!
Have it filed away for "someday" if this ever happens to the wife's '05.

Default Kind of like this....It's my preference.

Understand your responses and it is sort of like mods, some do it, some don't. Me, I don't. If you are going to drive a Corvette, be prepared to spend some money from time to time. I do.
V.E.T.T.E. Very expensive to touch everything.

I am. And will. When it's warranted.
In this case, as far as I'm concerned, it's not. I actually prefer the modded option (tie back) than the stock one with a stupid solenoid getting you stuck somewhere, unable to shift in gear.
I would never ever even try to move the shifter without having my foot on the brake pedal, so the "safety" factor is a moot point to me.
In addition, this is a reversible option, so when and if I ever decide to sell the car, it can be brought back to factory specs as quickly as it was modded.
The shame here is on GM, for not having a cheap and easy solenoid replacement option, as there should be, because there is absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with the shifter itself.

Default Totally Agree.

This should have been a recall/safety bulletin by GM. I actually had a dealership say to me "C,mon. you drive a Vette, you can afford it." Being able to afford it is not the issue, GM should do the right thing and acknowledge the problem as theirs and fix it.
Some people you just want to smack.

Hey Eran,

What was the diagnosis and the repair? Did you have a good visit to the dealer? Keep me posted,

Kelly,
Had my repairs done at Classic Chevrolet Sugarland Texas. Don Kerstetter's staff of GM Certified Corvette Technicians took care of the problem for us. I decided that it would be best to replace the shifter assembly and they did as I requested. We also had some of the fluids flushed and replaced per mileage recommendations, the door exterior pushbuttons replaced, and the pesky hood rods that never seemed to hold vacuum correctly replaced too. We were VERY SATISFIED with the work and the Loaner Tahoe was an added bonus.
So for all of the naysayers on here that seem to bash everyone for what they do with their Vettes I did spend a lot more than originally intended, but if you want to keep your Vette right you will spend the money.
Peace, Eran & Kelly

It sounds to me like you are the one bashing those of us that are able to diagnose and fix a problem ourselves without needing a dealer to do it.

Eran: Good for you. Couldn't be happier for you that the dealer visit got you satisfied..... not sure where you got that it made the rest of us "naysayers".

Is that part of the "you're either with me or against me" paranoid philosophy?

I have been able to diagnose and repair most if not all problems I have had both on the 1994 C4 and the 2005 C6. Some repairs due to a 5 level Spinal Fusion keep from doing the things I once was able to do myself. This is one I chose to have repaired by Classic Chevrolet Sugarland.
As for me, I have always had the attitude that if it is your car you should do what you want with it. I am neither for nor am I against what anyone does with their own car.

Nobody was bashing you. Just trying to help you save some money. Would love to know what the dealer did charge.
