For those of you who do, or who have lived in rural areas, what were some effective rodent deterrents that you used... besides traps? I've heard that Ivory soap works wonders. Any other ideas?
I've had success (no problems) using Bounce dryer sheets in the engine bay and Irish spring soap along with moth ***** around the exterior. Obviously, setting a few Mouse traps underneath the vehicle will be quite effective as we'll. good luck.
I've used the Bounce dryer sheets for 2 years now and so far, so good. I lay them in the engine bay and in the car and they seem to work, plus, they leave a semi pleasant smell. I also put down a couple of bait bags near the garage door to keep them out. My house is in the woods, so, mice are inevitable, but, so far under control.
The little bast ids did $850 damage to the wiring in my truck. The plug in deterrent was like a dinner bell...... No good... Drilled a bunch of holes in an Altoid Gum tin and loaded them with mothballs..Put in about 4 of them.Problem gone. FOR NOW
Thanks for the ideas guys! Won't do the cats as I'd have to clean up after them. The poison may be an option, will be staying with my boss, not sure if there are pets, if so, the poison option is out. Soap, dryer sheets and moth ***** sounds like great ideas... cheap too!

Don't poison them, trap them instead. If they ingest the poison and die somewhere inside the car, the smell will get pretty ugly. Use snap or glue traps, this way you know you got them.
I use the Bounce sheets like others and place some traps in the corners of the pole barn. Plus the -40 below temps do a good job since the barn isn't heated.
if you can keep the trash cans and antifreeze out of the garage it helps a lot. otherwise mothballs outside the car and drier sheets inside the car, plus it smells good when stored. there are ultrasonic GIZMOS you plug into the wall that are advertised but I have never used them. a cat will also work, but the little bastard is likely to walk on and scratch the cars
Havahart traps outside the garage, followed by swim lessons.
Glue traps and snap traps all around inside the garage, but not in/under the car- don't want the bait attracting them.
Also, a Tupperware container with holes punched in the lid, holding a cupful of moth *****; one under each axle of the car.
Replace moth ***** every 3 months.
So far, no more chipmunk or mouse damage. But a modest number of dead critters.
They like dark places for nesting, so you might leave the hood open if storing the car for winter.
