Which is more rare / collectable? 427 vs. ZR1

new 22 percent off and more new even more used! ZR1 less numbers so it is doing somewhat better. Don't pay any where near MSRP for either!

For a good comparison from past history you might want to reference a COPO 427 Chevelle versus a 375 hp 396 L78 Chevelle. Back in the early '70s a friend sold his COPO Chevelle for less than $2K, less than half of new price. No particular demand and they were still pretty new. Rarity at that point didn't matter much. Today, a restored COPO is worth over $200K. Today, the 396 car probably wouldn't draw more than $75K. They all depreciate like a rock for the first few years. 30-40 years from now, the later ZR1s will be the big money car. The early '90s LT5 cars were built in too big of numbers to ever end up high dollar collectibles. If the factories build much more than 1500 of a given car, it never achieves super collector car status. However, the COPOs were a one year deal with fewer than 400 built. ZR1s have been churned out for several years. There are more than enough out there for the collectors so prices will probably never be too high. No bidding wars on the horizon. Rarity and high hp are what dictate prices in these types of cars. Collectors are always looking for the top performance models plus rarity and that tells me that the ZR1 will always be the one to choose over the Z06 for long term value. As far as the electronics, in 40 years time, it will still be the guys with deep pockets who will be owning them for their collections. They can afford to buy whatever they need no matter the price. For us average Joes, the electronics will be a nightmare. Already GM has discontinued some of the electronic modules on the C5s. I don't think I even want to own the car we have in ten years time never mind 40. Oh I forgot, I'll be dead and gone in 40 years.

Good grief. Seriously, you're going to spend in the neighborhood of $100k for a car and you're worried about future value and collectibility? In 30 years when it starts to matter they'll still be worth less than if you put the money in a low risk/low yield account.

I can't speak to investment values but don't think either will do much in our lifetimes. As for entertainment value (and pucker factor) it's ZR1 all the way.

And with the extremely low prices on used zr1 's currently, then I can only imagine that used 427's in the future will take huge hits in value.

Are we talking banker or car enthusiast? Maybe you should sit on a CD and it will increase like your plan.

Hi,
No I am not a banker just a car enthusiast who wonders how special editions play out.
Mustangs have a special edition every 15 minutes and I don't put much value in them.
The Corvette 427 seems unusual. Special engine, special enhanced convertible frame. It really is a "special" car. I know the ZR1 is a monster and a legend but as some said, is around for several years now.
So I was just curious what folks thought a collector would be more interested in.

What I REALLY want to do is buy a C4 ZR-1 for $18k now, and in about 3 years, get a C6 ZR1 to go with it. But I have to have a convertible, too, so I guess I'll have to keep my current car.
So much for my marriage...

You can always sell a car down the road and get something out of it in return. Get rid of a wife down the road and all you get....well, you wont get anything...she will.
