I am helping a friend with their 2006 convertible which appears to have the Z51 package. I say that because of the drilled rotors, however I feel they have the "dish" groove on the rotors from wear. It has 45K, can these rotors be turned if they are not too thin or they must be replaced to accept new pads.

it was passed down to them and they want to sell it, I advice them to do the brake, they might not pass the MD inspection. If they have to be replace, any suggestion where to get replacement parts?

The only way to know if they can be turned is to measure the thickness and factor in the depth of the grooves. The minimum thickness is stamped on the edge of each rotor. We usually discourage turning Z51 rotors though, just in general.

I just looked for someone else, new Z51 rotors are $100/ea for the fronts, $77/ea for the rears, plus about $60 shipping from our vendor partstaxi.com. New Delco ceramic pads are $100/ all 4.

May I ask why? I have a Z51 and will eventually have to deal with brake work, so I'd like to know.

Please note I said "generally"......meaning not necessarily in all cases but.......

The holes make them a more difficult to do right. The machine has to be set up just right. There have been a few stories with unhappy endings over the years.

Removing material makes them less able to dissipate heat thereby more susceptible to warping and cracking.

The decision to turn the should include the above along with the usual starting thickness, how much is anticipated to be removed and compare that to the minimum recommended thickness.

A light clean up cut is okay but any major cutting is just not worth the risk......to many Vette owners. On typical commuter cars there just aren't the considerations involved, cut 'em and use 'em.

If you feel ambitious you could do a search for turning rotors and read both sides of the issue, and both sides have supporters and the usual arguments ensue.

Thank you! If it was my car I would replace them, the only time I would consider turning them if they not drilled.

Last time I looked, the Service Manual said the rotors should only be turned if they are heavily grooved or pitted.
On our C5 that was getting track time, I went through 3 sets of pads and never turned the rotors despite some light-moderate grooving. Worked fine.
