I searched and didn't find anything on driving Route 66. Has anyone here done it? If so, did you do it as part of an organized tour? Did you get books/other literature to guide you. Any suggestions/recommendations would be appreciated. I'm in SW WI.
There's more written about that road than any other in the country. If you can't find everything you want to know online, then visit the library.
One special part in NE OK is the Ribbon road that was the predecessor to Rt 66. A 13 mile segment still exists starting in Miami and heading South toward I-40.
While in Miami, visit the Coleman theater. You will not be disappointed.
The longest uninterrupted original segment is in AZ from Seligman to Kingman.
I have made the route 66 trip several times, but only once from it's origin to the west coast. Pretty rough road most of the way and a lot of tourist traps, but still fun. I have a few classic cars and always drove one of them. We'll be making another cross country trip this spring. This time we'll be in the Vette. Because we've been on route66 several times, we'll be taking a different route this time. As others have said, lots of info can be found and lots of books are available. I'd definitely look for the things you find interesting, and pass on the rest. If you try to see it all, you need a LOT of time.
Thanks for the responses. I'm 71 and this has been on my bucket list. Had wanted to motorcycle it but we sold out Harley's last year. I'm wondering if it's worth the time and expense. Those who have recently traveled 66 know if it is.
Check out the website to the link I mentioned above. It has everything from pics, turn by turn directions, maps, where to get books, downloadable gps maps and a forum of they're own. They talk about all the questions your asking. Points of interests, dining, lodging, attractions, etc.

Age 71, on your bucket list, and you still have to ask advice if it's worth the time and expense???
I'm not wanting to lie on my death bed thinking about the things I didn't do and I'm older than you.

I drove it From San Diego/ LA back in 1997. "Well, I'm a standing on a corner
in Winslow, Arizona
and such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on, baby, don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is
gonna save me". Actually it was gone, Just a dusty town with one gas station. I was going to spend my first night there. Nope just kept going to albuquerque new mexico. Most of the road is gone but it's still great to drive the Corvette across this great country. I grew up in New York so I dove back for my high school reunion. Great Trip..I'll never forget it.
My advice would be to get the guide books, plan the trip and DO IT! Get off I-40 as much as you have time for. Stop in places like Clinton OK, Shamrock TX, Tucumcari & Gallop NM, Seligman, Hackberry & Kingman AZ. I love to photograph the old gas stations and motels (motor courts) along the route. You need to see these before they are all gone.
I did it back in1962 when it was still very much an active artery! Did it both directions.
Cold as hell in parts as I did the return trip in the dead of winter. Just under 70 hours
from LA to Pgh. Went east to west in the summer and took a week. Lots of fun in a '57 Chevy 283 running dual fours and a hi-lift cam. Got home let the car sit for a few days an upon fire up sucked a valve in blew a piston. Running a solid lifter car like we did was not a wise move in the winter.
Thanks again for the comments. There's almost unlimited opportunities but limited time. Am planning on taking my bride of 50 years (next year) on an Alaskan cruise for our anniversary and would like to squeeze in the Route 66 trip before time makes the ultimate call. Again, great comments and much appreciated. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
