Couple of suggestions:
ONLY if absolutely necessary, use a 3M pad or plastic scouring pad on the barrels to get them clean. Other materials will tear up the paint.
This would be bad.
Use Rejex (2 coats or more) on the wheel fronts backs and barrels and they will be a LOT easier to clean in the future. A wheel brush or foam pad on a stick will get the barrels clean with car soap and water.
BE VERY CAREFUL with any aluminum brightener.
I remember seeing somewhere in this forum that someone got it on the leaf springs and the stuff ate through the springs to the point of failure.....
Cleaning can be fun and somewhat therapeutic, but be careful with your materials and cleansers.

I agree! the aluminum brightner would NOT be good on painted surfaces. It says right on the bottle to only use it on rough aluminum surfaces- says it will etch highly polished aluminum. But for our suspensions i think it's perfect. I tried a small patch and it went from corroded, to white in about a minutes' time....
SOS pads are not a good choice to clean your wheels
1 - way to abrasive
2 - they can leave fines of steel attached to your wheel that will show up as rust in the near future.
Only use items to clean your wheels that you would use to clean your hood.
SOS pads are the ONLY way to clean chrome anythings.....hose it off, and there goes your fines.....SOS pads WILL scratch your hood- it's just paint. Chrome is much harder than the SOS pad- the SOS pad is harder than the corrosion that grows on the chrome, which is why it takes it off so well. I've got thousands of dollars invested in the chrome on my 62 caddy . I wouldn't recommend it if it put the chrome at risk. Give it a try on something.
I clean the backside of my wheels every time I clean the car. Also used the aluminum brightener to do a lot of the suspension parts.
Its real easy to clean the backside of the wheels, just buy a brush with a long handle.
be carefull with the aluminum brightner!!!!!! i remeber a member doing a widebody on his yellow c6 used some got it on his springs and it actualy destroyed it, he had to buy a new composite spring
i just painted all of mine flat black so i dont have to mess with it
I've used SOS pads on chrome for years. It always does a good job. Did any of you guys ever have 60's or 70's cars? Chrome bumpers? SOS was the standard. I still have a 62 caddy that's covered in chrome. Only way to go!
And it used to be generally accepted medically to perform lobotomies, blood letting and use Mercury to heal wounds... there are now safer products and non metallic pads made to clean both metal and aluminum including chrome.
My wheels are sooo dirty!! i haven't washed my silver Vette in like 2 months and i'm kinda digging the dirty look (just on silver though).... It's very Mad-Maxish
