Jeez guy's, I was pretty fired up about getting a Z06, until I read through 70 pages regarding the valve guide issue. Can someone give me a synopsis on whether or not GM is stepping up to the plate? If they don't think that leaving this issue unresolved is going to cost them in sales, they are not listening.
Don't let it ruin your experience. It is a bit overblown in my opinion. Get one with a warranty, or if you are paranoid about it then get the heads re-worked by a reputable shop, the cars are a blast to drive and own. I came from a base C6 - no regrets!!
It is an amazing machine!

I tend to agree with 1Sikstik, although it is happening to more than just a few cars and statistically there is continued argument over whether it is significant. However I agree the car is a blast to drive and own, I struggled with your same dilemma two years ago...bought mine and I love it...no regrets...yet.
I do need to confess though that I do know one person (not forum) that has had a dropped valve on his Z. Plus I did choose to have my heads addressed even though mine showed no signs of wear. So, do take that into consideration when deciding on this car. I knew of this topic before I got mine, not regretting my decision.
My first vette was a 2008 coupe.
I had a Z06 for a short while and now have a 427 (same engine)
It took a little while to get used to the sewing machine click.
I am still getting used to the awsome power in a wide body.
I too think the valve issues are blown out of proportion...the biggest vette dealer in Alberta told me they have had no valve issues with anyone's stock 427.

If you are serious...post this question in the Z section...I beat on my 13Z but I'm under warranty and would never buy ANY sports car without one....JMHO...lets keep this Valve crap in the Z section..it gets very old....

I think you have a legitimate question as I was wondering the other day why there were so many used Z06 for sale? I was using one of those Carguru type search engines and took off all search radius parameters and did a country wide search and 400 Vettes showed up for the two years I was looking for and I was shocked at how many were for sale, here on CF too. I thought it was just me being me thinking people are trying to get out of them before they have an issue...so I looked up the production schedules and see that the Z06 represent usually around 18% of the total Vettes produced in a given year but seemed much more that 18% of the Vettes that came up in the search.
I guess I should have gone back and done the math and see how much more than 18% they represented...maybe it's just a feeling anomaly.

buy it. i bought my Z in may. it had 9K miles and i was well aware of the valves. in may when it comes out of warranty ill be gearing up for the H/C. came from a base Z51. wouldn't go back regardless of the valves.
if worried and all you want the Z06 for is the engine, just slap a header/tune on an LS3 and have 90% of the power of the Z without the worry of the valve issue
If you can afford a Z06, then get it. I wouldn't let it worry you. And if you buy one, the first thing you can do is go to a shop and have them take a look at the valves. It will be like 2 hours of labor max but will give you peace of mind.
