Default Tip for Backup C6 Hatch Key

While in Home Depot, I had a brief chat with the guy that cuts keys. I asked if he could cut a backup key that pops the hatch on my 08 C6. He inserted my key from GM in the Home Depot key reader/matcher and said he could and the cost would be $1.97. I took the $2 key to parking lot and it popped the hatch. The generic Home Depot #28 $2 key is now in my billfold.

You never know when it will be needed and the price was right.

Good information from some here who might need one.

But I've got to wonder what happened to all the keys that came with the fobs.

The B-106 blank works for all 05-07 with the separate key. Since the 08-13 key is a little narrower it MIGHT work if the combination doesn't use the filled area. The B-106 doesn't have the big plastic head that the B-106-P has on the 05-07.

I paid $2 at a locksmith. The person cutting the key should be able to tell if an 08-13 combination will work.

This thread is really starting to make me feel stupid.

I pay hundreds of dollars to OnStar so they can unlock my car and you guys are throwing around terms like "two dollars for a wallet key".

I did the same thing, and then taped it under the car, incase of emergency.

If you have some kind of battery malfunction and have no power OnStar will not be able to unlock your doors!

Default Extra key

Took the key from the 13 to the locksmith and she said the B106 would not work and made me a new back up key $4.00 worked great.
Then I put a hide a key under the car after finding metal behind the rear tire. Can't hurt
Anyone have a plastic key made

But most likely if I had a battery malfunction and no power the fob wouldn't be locked inside the car, it would be in my pocket. I'd use the key built into the fob.

I was just making a feeble attempt at humor with my comment.

Am I the odd one that keeps the Key on me with my normal keys, and the fob?

I had a spare key cut also and after making sure it worked, I placed it in a hide a key magnetic box and stuck it to the frame right under the rear facia. I then put a piece of brown Gorilla tape over it just in case. The tape fell off after a while but the magnetic key box is still there, no problem. $4 for the key and the hide a key box. Yep I was locked out once also, never again.

I have one hidden under the rear and one in my wallet. In almost nine years I've never used either one. Keeping it on the keychain is not a good idea due to many owners lock them in the C6.

I don't think a plastic key would work well, both our 2006 and now our 2009 required a pretty good twist on the key to pop the trunk. If a plastic key broke off in the lock, then you're really screwed.

Count me in with mittens. When I get dressed in the morning, the fob/key goes into my pocket. It stays there until I get undressed in the evening.
Do we have a bunch of ladyboys who can't handle the extra burden of keeping the fob/key in their pocket?
But just in case, I also have a hidden key outside the car and a deeply hidden fob (wrapped in aluminum foil) inside the car. Because they're there, I've never needed them.

Get a magnetic hide a key box. Get under the car from the back and look straight up like the bottom rear of the trunk. Reach up and stick it to the steel frame.
