Alright, I know this is a beat to death thread, and I have read on how to program , long and short. So my FOB #1 quits working, I buy a new one off of ebay. It is new GM made in Mexico. I ask the local dealer how much to program, he tells me $50. I think, I can do this for free but if I do have a problem it is a tow bill so $50 sounds good plus I can go and have a beer while it gets done. I get back to the dealer after a beer and he said the hand held programmer will not work, the FOB is bad. My question is... has anyone heard of this and do I try the long method anyway?
you got nothing to lose by trying. I got a fob off of ebay also and it took 3 times doing the long method before it was recognized. (possibly my fault) make sure your battery is fully charged and you follow the steps exactly.
In this link, there is a "path" to test the slot. If the slot works, then you can do the long method to make your new FOB #1.
Do you have 2 FOBs? If not, correct the situation and have 2. Do the long method and you will have a new #1 & #2 FOB. First FOB put into program mode will become FOB #1.
The above assumes that your FOB is working and the battery is good. Are you getting "No FOB detected" messages? If so, use this: >> No FOB Detected checklist <<

Just a heads up, this long procedure will not work on some cars. I know this because mine is one of them. I received only one fob with my car as it started in Miami, was traded to the Daytona dealer and the second fob got lost somewhere along the way. Dealer ordered me a new one, but since I do not live in Daytona I tried the long procedure myself dozens of times, would not work. Finally took it to a local dealer, under warranty and asked them to fix it so I could program my own fobs. They spent several hours on the phone with GM support and they could not make it work. GM support person told the dealer to tell me that was no longer a function available in the new cars. Of course from here I knew that was BS.. Bottom line, they could not make it work on my car, and they programmed my fob for free. Seeing as there was nothing else wrong with my car I did not pursue it any further.
The battery is new. The FOB that does not work is #1, I have been using #2. I will use the long method to make the new FOB #1. I will post my results.
Do you realize you are not only going to reprogram #1... but essentially will be needing to reprogram the existing #2 since the long process wipes out and recreates an unique signature key for the newly created #1 fob.
My plan, if I have to do the Long relearn procedure, is to do it in the dealer's parking lot. Preferably, not far from the Service Entrance door. Just in case something goes wrong...
