I havent started my 13 GS in about 3 weeks and from past experience with my 03 I decided it was time to hook the charger up and recharge the battery. I was going to put the charger on slow (6 anp or less) and hook it up to the terminals under the hood. I had to take the fuse box cover off to make the connection. The directions say to hook the + terminal to the post by the fuse box and hook the - to a bolt on the engine case. The plated bolts were tapered and it was difficut to get a good conection so I wiggled the + charger clap around but got a lot of arcing and never did connect 100%. Arcing causes voltage surges and that is not good. So I removed the charger and replaced the fuse box cover. I opened the back hatch and hooked the charger straight to the battery. Got a good connection drawing 3 anps which is about what I would expect. After 12 hours the charge had dropped to about a half amp so its pretty much charged. I left the hatch open all night, the rear compartment lights went out in a couple minutes. Is there a better way to do this? I know some use a batterry tender or use the lighter plug but it seemed a lot easier on the 03 to pop the hood and hook up to the battery. I have never had very good luck with the OEM battery, usually a 72 month battery lasting 24 to 36 months and they would die from a dead/shorted cell probably from light usage. On my 03 I used a Optima yellow top and it was a vast improvement both in battery life and faster charging times...Any suggestions appreciated.
From: Richmond VA Everyone should have a VetteGuard
Should think about getting a battery tender. Sears or local auto parts, or Walmart. Put it on and forget about. I’ve used one for couple of years now on both the Vette and my wife’s Saab which are both stored all winter. Never a problem.
Genius chargers actually condition your battery. One of the venders here has a magnetic hookup that fits to the front of your grill. I don't even have to open the hood or worry about someone forgetting to unplug....perfect.
