This is a shot of the residue left on the magnetic drain plug. I get that they make them magnetic to catch stuff like this but I'm thinking that this may be a bit excessive. Anybody that's changed their oil that would comment I'd appreciate it.
LS7 with 9000 miles
I believe you have way to much shavings for just 9k miles.
Usually the magnet just has a metallic film of superfine residue.
I would certainly get a good mechanic to check it out.
Sorry.
Jim
Since you have less than 100,000 miles and the car is not 10 years old yet, take it to a Chevrolet dealer now!!! That does not look like bearing material. Something was not clearanced properly. Some of those shavings have been circulated throughout the engine and there is more damage than you know.
Normally the shavings would have the consistency of a wet powder looking stuff. Actual metal shards sticking off the magnet is not a good sign.
If you haven't tossed the old oil, I'd send it off to Blackstone and see what else is floating around. As a minimum look at the old oil and look for evidence of copper....ie bearing material. If you see it, that's a bad sign.

Just got my report back from Blackstone last week. The only thing that was high was titanium but we traced that back to the Castrol Edge that has a titanium additive. I also just ran this by the guy's at LMR and Jay said it's nothing to worry about. Who knows?
I can't call that "nothing to worry about".. I had one small shaving in my diff fluid at last change and it got CoW all flustered... Need to diff... posi clutch no good.. etc.. I told him I'd drive it until I killed it (the rear end) and the meantime stay on top of the fluid changes. Yes, I track the car and try to change all this stuff at least once per season (engine oil several times a season)... My car has 40K miles and I'm the third owner. On a new car, I'd be at the dealer with this evidence looking for an explanation.. No normal!!
I agree. I have never seen anything close to that. Usually just a very little bit of stuff, but never any metal parts, shards or anything. Hope you find out whats going on in your engine
