I have had AAA road coverage since the early 80's. I have used them several times, plus have had them change batteries twice. Their price for batteries is very competitive and couldn't be more convenient.
Two years ago, I moved my house and car coverage on our Florida house to them. Moved from Allstate. As I remember, Allstate moved the homeowners up about 40%. The auto coverage was significantly higher, but I was staying with them because of the homeowners. Not easy to get coverage in Florida.
AAA cold called me at that time. Gave me a very reasonable price. Even suggested more coverage for much less. Thought it might be a first year come on, but the renewal was only slightly higher the second year. Have had no claims thus far.
You should find out how far they will tow your car. My first plan with them was cheap too...but it would only tow the car 3 miles...after that it cost like $3 a mile. So if they end up towing it 30 miles, you owe THEM $90. I don't remember what the plan was called, but my current plan with them takes the car 100 miles- free. i think it was $85 a year. The vette's never been towed , but my son'd old blazer's been on the hook twice.
I've been a member since 1978. I've had dead batteries and they give me a jump, ran out of gas and they bring me 5 gallons, locked my keys in my car, several times, and they open it for me, locked my keys in my trunk and they made me a key. They cover people, not a specific car and that makes it nice when you're out with friends.
I think the basic plan covers 5 miles of towing and you have to pay per mile after that. The plan I have covers 100 miles of towing. I lost a fuel pump in my 2003 AE Corvette in eastern Washington and needed to be towed to the nearest dealer which was about 25 miles away. If you travel a lot this plan might be worth considering.
I drive cross country and the only time I'm worried a little is when I have no cell service.
The price over here just kept going up and up and up every year to the point that it was no longer cost effective so I cancelled mine after 15 years. I hardly used it and my insurance has the towing coverage.
I've had AAA since 1970 and find it "good" insurance. Last year when I was in LA I had a flat tire on my rental and didn't want to change it myself. Hertz will send someone out but they charge you. Called AAA and they came within 20 min., happily changed the tire, would not accept a tip and I was on my way. Worthwhile to me........the charge from Hertz was more than my membership.
