Just bought an '05. Has an what I believe to be an aftermarket short-shifter and handle. Seller bought the car with these on and knew nothing about them -- but clearly he did not like this handle because he bought a beautiful stock-style handle in suede with contrasting stitching. He never had it installed.
I also really dislike the handle, which totally does not go with a short-shifter, so I today tried to remove it. Does not have a set screw, but I could not budge it loose. As my efforts were making the shifter itself start twisting like a torsion bar, I stopped the process. I did not wish to remove the console and play with it anymore today, without asking a few questions here first (see pics below):
Does anybody recognize this handle style?
If so, does it simply thread on?
Looking at the shot of the shifter (what little I could uncover without disassembling everything) does this look familiar? Almost looks like sawed-down stock to me.
Is it possible threads are of different materials which might have reacted and "frozen?"
The **** looks similar, but the base of the shifter shaft (second pic), from what I could see, is totally different. Thanks for the link, though -- might have half the mystery solved...
I'm beginning to wonder, if the thing is really on there too tightly, whether a Dremel cut off the top, and one straight down the side right to the threads, might enable me to break it off, then screw on the stocker...
Looks to be a Auger shift ****, and guessing that someone used loctite to thread it one if they installed in on a after market shifter. If not, and on the stock shifter, may have drilled and epoxied to install it to the stock shift rod.
Short of splitting it in two, may want to just pull the shifter/box out, then pull the shifter off the of the box to get pull the **** without doing damage to the shifter itself.

Thanks. Really looks likes cut-down stock shifter. If epoxied on as you suggest, a bit of work and expense ahead, because the stock shift boot is stuck between the shifter shaft and the ****
the actual shifter box, I've read, have bushings in them that wear out. this one being in an older model may be at that point. maybe it's some preventive maintenance to take it all out, replace either the whole box (don't think they sell them separately but MGW does sell new ones), or at least the bushings.
