How often do you check your cabin air filter? Is there a brand out there that is easy to insert? The one I have now I got at NAPA, and I about crushed the thing inserting it in the slot.
I live near the ocean in San Clemente CA so I'm sure the filter will last longer here then some locations. In nine years I've replaced it once. I understand all the filters are a tight fit.
I change mine once a year. I bought a 4 year old car with low miles and didn't know about the filter until reading the manual. Obviously the original owner didn't know about it either. I was caked full with dust, dirt and bird feathers. If you squeeze it together lightly and go slow it seems to help.

I replaced mine in the '06 at 12k miles. Wasn't really bad, but figured it couldn't hurt. I used the Purolator that went in easily. Plus, it was the cheapest.
Our 2009 came with the "thin" looking non-charcoal filter, like in your picture; I've been using the GM charcoal ones and they look just like the other (charcoal) filter in your pic.
I wonder if this is one of those "only a few makers but sold under many names" situations?
some aftermarket filters can be tricky to install and may be just slightly bigger because lots complain of the exact thing you did. factory filters just seem to slide right in. my vette only gets 3-5k a year so I have changed it twice I think (05) on my DD however I change it every year. as a matter of fact today since I changed the oil and thought about it, good thing if you saw it when it came out

Crinkled filter is a Wix that was inserted and removed twice. Below is a Purolator that was inserted and removed twice. The factory filter appeared very similar to the folded Wix. The factory couldn't get them in either without the sides collapsing.
When the Wix filter started to fold going in I found that inserting two flexible plastic sticks into the back corners and pushing allowed me to "pull" the filter in rather than push it.

The OEM I removed had very flexible sides. The replacement did not and was a pain to install. Next time I'll go OEM. I change mine about every 2-21/2 years, about 12,000 miles.
