Changing the batteries is not part of the design. The other reports I've seen are that it can be done, but the results are a gamble and it's kind of a PITA project. And if one of them fails after a week or a month, then you need to do it all over again. More PITA.
If you buy new ones, the GM units normally work very well and last a long time. Aftermarket can be cheaper, I believe Schraeder makes the OEM and sells them on the side a little cheaper. There are other aftermarket makers that seem to have serious reliability problems.
Be sure to specify which year the car is, there have been changes and you need to get the correct ones.
