I know there is many different threads out there about cut outs and Leaf spring failures but I haven’t seen anything on how many miles people had on their car before this failure and if normal daily use caused this or they were driving like mad men all the time. I just bought a 2007 C6 with cut outs, it has 15k on it and the guy has had the cut outs on the car for about 1.5 years. He has only put 3k miles on the car in 2 years so he didn’t drive it much. Just wondering if this is something I should worry about or since it was a short time period and he didn’t drive it much I should be ok. The cut outs are covered now.
the biggest thing is where the cut outs are placed. if they point at the rear spring then yes it is a possibility it could make it fail. it thats the case dont ever open them. i know there isnt hardly any room under a c6 to place the cut outs but you certainly dont want to destroy the car just to make it louder.
My question is more about what might have happened already or if this small amount of use of the car with the cut outs means nothing?
it really all comes down to where they are positioned, when open do they dump on the spring? you will never truly know how much they were opened. does the spring have a bunch of black suet built up on it? is it discolored? does it look like it got hot at any point? if not then you should be fine.
Ill have to check after work but when I bought it I had it inspected and even asked them about the spring (being damaged by cut outs) and they said it was far enough away from them. I would think they would have said something if there was build up on them or what not. So basically if they don’t look like they have been heated up and cooled I should be solid?
