Good electronics cleaner will have some sort of corrosion preventer in it. This is a silicone or oil based lubricant basically...like WD-40. If this gets on the laser lens, the unit is finished until that lens is cleaned by hand with some sort of solvent.
Standard cleaners only clean the outer face of the lens, and not the set of mirrors below the lens that can get dusty to cause the laser distortion problems to get the error in the first place (read using canned air though the slot can end up with must more dust on the mirrors instead).

i also have tried using a cd/cleaner disc. after inserting the disc, nothing happens, no disc spinning, no screen display that says track 1 or 2, nada. i think my problem is more than just dust on the lens or mirrors

No disc spinning makes me think it is more than dust. Dust is just the most likely and easiest thing to check first...

just came back from the dealer, Bob Stall Chev in San Diego. the Serv. Tech. took one look at what the cd player is not doing, and told me it can't be fixed. he'd have to replace the whole unit. over $1000, his advice was to buy an aftermarket unit.
So, my next question is what unit have other forum members bought? like to spend no more than $600-700, and not that interested in "bluetooth", but would like to access "pandora". Any suggestions will be appreciated. Jim

First, it can be fixed...there are companies that specialize in fixing factory stereos. Second, used replacements can be bought also...even here on the forum. Lots of people who do aftermarket then sell the factory stereo. Your choice though...aftermarket ones are very good also.

Update: I was very close to buying a Kenwood HU and my brother (who has 4 vette's and is a master mechanic in Illinois) found a company that specializes in repairing OE head units. it's going to cost $225 and some shipping and installation expense, but its still about $300+ less than an aftermarket unit. If anyone needs the info on this company, let me know.
