I am pondering replacing my factory non bose head unit with a higher end after market navigation system. My car is a 2lt so I have bluetooth phone steering controls and radio controls on the steering wheel. My question is do the head units that are out now work with the steering wheel controls or do I have to sacrifice that for the navigation?
I think you need to ask yourself how often do I REALLY use navigation? I kid you not, I bet it's less than 1%. In that case, use a smart phone for the nav and if you don't have a smart phone, get a $100 Garmin. Unless your wanting to replace it for music purposes, I think you are wasting your time IMO.
I can't answer the question, but just something to think about.
It's for music purposes as well. I want to be able to stream music from my phone and make phone calls. But the steering wheel controls are also important to me. I pondered restoring in the factory nav and USB connection but I have heard it is not so good.

I replaced my non-Bose head unit with a Kenwood. And yes, there is a cable you can get so the steering wheel controls still work. Not sure, but it might be called Maestro? I had mine installed by DDMods and they did all the work and used the proper cables.
I think you have to be careful with Bose units. Something to do with the unique impedance of the Bose speakers, I think. There are others here who can address that much better than I can.
crutchfield has everything you need if your going to upgrade your radio/nav system. go on their website and check out the systems they have if interested.
Here is my set-up, and it's Kenwood, non Nav, but has dvd,cd player, IPod, bluetooth phone and IPod and had them install satellite receiver for XM Radio. I use Garmin when I need to get lost.
