All modern 12V systems are coded red for hot (+) and black for ground (-). Ground goes to the block/frame; hot goes to the starter solenoid terminal. Not sure if that's the question you're asking, but when you're disconnecting, always remove the ground first, then the hot. That way, if you accidentally make contact with the frame/engine, you won't get an arc.
