Default battery tender question

bought a battery tender, the instructions say

1) do not connect in a closed or non ventilated area (does this mean garage)

2) it also says do not connect both terminals to the battery post
one to the battery post and on to the chassis or engine block

are both or one of these accurate?

they're both ridiculous for any trickle charger. I'd probably comply with the second just because it's easy, but I don't believe it will really make a difference.

I've been using $5 harbor freight trickle chargers on everything I own for a decade with issue, I don't know why people treat them as some mythological advanced piece of technology.

I haven't had any explosions in the 13 years I've used mine...

I would follow instructions..

how often do you use your battery tender and how long do you normally leave it connected to your car battery

I have been using a Battery Tender for years now with multiple applications in a garage - one stays on my ZR1 at all times unless I am driving it - always use a bolt on the block or chassis for the ground. On my other vehicles/boat/motocycle I do the same thing and never put both connections on the battery itself.

Good luck!

Both are safety measures composed by a legal department. A closed or non ventilated area usually means the passenger compartment. If a battery is located in the passenger compartment or trunk (Like my Benz) it needs to be in a sealed container that vents to the outside. A trickle charger hooked to the terminals would mean the top of the sealed case is open and the battery may off-gas during charging, filling the passenger compartment.
The legal people are also afraid of hooking the negative clamp to the battery post because IF any gas is present a spark could cause an explosion.
You'll be fine if the battery is under the hood. Attaching the negative clamp to the frame or block always seemed like a good idea to me if possible.

Just the manufacturer covering their ***.

Get a lighter socket adapter and just plug it in that way. Very easy and you won't drive off with it still plugged in.

I leave mine connected all the time.

I didn't do either. Mines in a garage and I have the positive and negative terminals in use. No issues for two years so far.

As mentioned, get the cigarette lighter connection. Have the CTEK 3300 and have never had any trouble.
