Not sure if this is the right place or not. I have a 2005 C6 Z51 car with a service column lock bypass installed. This fix has worked for over a year now. The last few weeks I have had a drain on the battery then column lock message. When this happens some times the car will start or not. I have had it to two dealers to have it checked out. The first one said it was working alright and charged me 120.00. Didn't fix anything, second one looked at it and also found no problems.
Now here is my real concern, some times after the message appears the start button wont turn the engine over. If I toggle the start button off and on to Acc. a few times it starts every time. Most days if I drive it, I don't have any problems starting it. I have been told not to worry but put it on a battery tender and drive it. How could I sell this car with issues that chevy wont or cant fix.
Any ideas on what is going on? Start button not shutting off computers maybe? I really want to keep this car as long as I can.
Bottom line: A month and a couple thousand $$$ and it was fixed. I am assuming you have a 2005 manual 6 speed. If so- your steering column lock is probably failing. The good news is there is now a bypass available that will eliminate the lock mechanism completely! Not sure who is selling it on the forum, but I think you will find it if you do a search. Supposedly easy to install and a LOT CHEAPER than going the route I had to
If you are not using a battery tender I suggest that you start. Unfortunately, your battery might already be too far gone. Take it to an auto store and let them test it. Definitely get a tender though.
Thanks for the looking but the answer isn't a battery. Changed that out the first time I had a problem. It is possible a battery tender might keep up the battery to keep the column lock message from being sent. But that is not a fix but a band aid. Still doesn't tell me why with a column lock bypass in place, it has now become a problem. Also why toggling the start button seems to make any difference to starting car.
how old is the bypass? I read a while back that some were defective as the person that designed them left the company and the company was attempting to replicate them and they were hit or miss. do a search...you'll find the post. bottom line...your column lock fix is most likely defective.

I installed it almost two years ago now. Has worked flawlessly up to now. The last two days I have had no problems at all.. I guess I will just get a battery tender and forget about it.
I have the same 2005 M6 issues . So far cycle the start switch up down .
Push the clutch a few extra bumps . Lots of folks suggest the cell phone scrambles the FOB signal on starts . Try the phone in the back or passenger floor . So far switch cycling and smacking the FOB against
the stick shift once , recycles the unit . Never been stuck .
Red top battery and steer column lock by pass installed .
I have Iphone 4 and now 5, have if the phone is near the fob I can't open the doors, start the car, till I get the phone away from the fob. That could be your problem, I also own 05.
There is or was a reflash for that column lock thing.Whether it worked or not I have no clue. GM had to do something because it was happening to people while the car was moving sometimes...they never did issue a recall. Your computer related stuff (bcm, ecm?) may be going bad too...

How do you get the reflash if there was no recall?
I think the dealer can do it , lots of minor revisions in the software that don't effect all years / vin number . Most cars run fine on the old version .
