Half way home on a trip I have made 6 previous times in my 2012 GS, the factory navigation unit did not recognize the road I was traveling, which is a major highway (PA Turnpike), it showed the car several miles south and at one time showed it being on a rail road track.
Why would a problem like this occur in the middle of a trip? Having the unit recalculate the trip several times did not resolve the problem and I finally turned the unit off. Will the recalibration function correct this problem?
Did you notice if there was a no satellite warning (a box with GPS and a line through it)
The only reason I can think of for the vehicle not showing correctly on the map would be the satellite signal being lost for a time.
If the satellite is lost the nav will continue to DR Nav
Bingo!
This happened to me on a cross-country trip in 2007. The sat was out for a few hours, and the icon kept on going. It showed that I was in the middle of Lake Michigan by the time the sat came back online.
There are a few other areas that will not show correctly on the nav system as well, but they will be consistently incorrect. For example if you drive near the Pentagon (on the roads right next to it or the parking lots), it will show you much further away than you really are. I'm sure you can guess why this would be so.

Good call, the GPS icon in the upper left corner of the screen had a single line through it. I should have realized that was indicating a problem.
It was in this state for almost 2 hours and upon arriving home and parking in the garage it was still showing this situation. Is that common to loose the signal for that length of time or could there be another issue?
I will move the car out of the garage this weekend to check it.

Enough said. New head unit with Garmin GPS solved all my problems.
