Default 08 check engine light "vent code"

New to the forum and recently purchased a C6,car has low mileage, when purchased it had 10k miles ,currently 13k plus.In any case recently had a check engine light come on ,went to Oreilly's ran the scanner and says it's a vent code.Should I start with a gas cap ?
Or off to the dealer? Ideas please?

I think it's the evap vent, search the actual code number online and you should find lots of info. Was the code p0449?

P0442 is "evaporative emission system leak detected (small leak)" and is likely the gas cap. I had this code once, it wouldn't go away after over a dozen engine start cycles. Being leary of dealers, i bought a code reader and cleared it and it never re-appeared. There are other codes relating to major leaks that may require repairs. I would invest in a code reader and determine what code is associated with your situation, and go from there.

This thread was posted a few days ago with the codes for vent/gas cap, evap issues.
It's a good read and could help

It turned out to be the valve on my 2008. It was a little difficult to get to it with AT. We ran the tests that were in the manual. If I remember you check to see if the computer is turning the valve on and off with test light. My valve was bad and I needed the the small harness as well. The GMPP covered it for me.

Double check that your gas cap is on correctly and clear the codes once or twice if it still comes back I would replace the fuel valve solenoid as described above.
